If you are reading this, you are probably experiencing low back pain or have had issues with it in the past.  According to the American Chiropractic Association, over 31 million people may be experiencing back pain at any given time.  It is a big issue – and a big cost for companies and our military.  With such a large issue, by now we should have figured out the best way to treat it, right? Unfortunately, it isn’t so simple.  Let’s dive into that a bit more…

First and foremost, please understand not all low back pain is the same; and surprisingly, every year new research emerges to help us better understand it.  Some issues are very concerning and even frightening, such as cancer.  Fortunately, that is very rare and should be treated immediately by specialists best suited for that.   Sometimes it can be trauma.  That might mean something as serious as a fracture or a simple as poor posture.  Sometimes the pain arises spontaneously, and what we are learning is that almost always, it can be traced back to an underlining condition that we weren’t aware of.  We will visit that topic on a separate blog. Let’s get to the point – where should you start?

Most health care professionals will agree that for non-complicated back pain (no major trauma, no neurological deficiencies, etc.) starting with a conservative approach is best.  Not only is it best for the patient long term, but it also will save them money.    What are conservative approaches?  The most common are  Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, Physical Therapy, and Chiropractic.  Believe it or not, each of these professions can greatly differ depending on what provider you see. Start with asking friends, family, and coworkers – Where have they gone?  Were they happy with their results?  If you are new to the area, research their reviews.

I won’t elaborate on these other health care choices as that is not my area of expertise.  However, I do know that chiropractic has been proven time and time again to not only help, but it also is arguably one of the most cost effective options for spinal musculoskeletal issues – i.e. LOW BACK PAIN.  If you are considering coming to Nelson Chiropractic for this condition, we strive to be straight forward, honest, and respectful of your time.  If in the first visit I feel a different health care provider can help, we discuss that.  If you have questions about other options, we discuss that.  If the history and exam warrant X-rays, we review those options as well.  (We do not have onsite digital X-ray machine).  If after the history and exam both you, as the patient, and I, as the Doctor, feel the best solution is to begin chiropractic treatment, we then discuss what a treatment plan will look like that is specific to you.

We value honesty and integrity.  We are grateful for each patient that comes through our doors.  Our goal is to help you get better whether it is through chiropractic, chiropractic and other conservative measures, or seeking other medical professionals. Ultimately, we want to help improve your health, reduce the risk of pain, and help you get back to doing whatever you enjoy the most!
